Benefits
Every membership level includes services and materials that will help you create plans and stay in legal compliance.
Supervisor Training
Support through training and education helps ensure supervisors and project leaders have the skills necessary to de-escalate crises, navigate conflict resolution, communicate effectively under pressure, and respond to emergency events. Our online classes can each be completed by supervisors and administrators in under an hour, using brief video discussions, interactive exercises, case studies, and a review of core principles. Learners will have the opportunity to complete a post-learning assessment to ensure proficiency in the topic (this is not required but recommended). The responsible person(s) for the workplace violence prevention plan will receive a summary of staff who have completed the courses within the employer selected timeframe (we recommend two months). Classes and materials are available in both Spanish and English. Additional accommodations for language or other ADA disabilities will be provided upon request. Available trainings include:
What is a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan?
Crisis Communication
Conflict Resolution
Critical Incident Response
Performance Improvement Planning and Termination
The Bulletin Board
The Bulletin Board is a forum for members to talk with each other and interact with WVPA advisory board members. Beyond a simple listserv, our forum allows for searchability and gives members the ability to customize their preferences and options. This community space creates an opportunity to ask questions, learn tips and advice from similar types of businesses, and is an ideal place for new members to learn more about the development and implementation of a workplace violence prevention plan.
Resource Library
WVPA has created a detailed resource library for our members on a wide variety of workplace safety and security topics. These include fact sheets and training videos on topics of threat and violence risk assessments, bystander intervention and empowerment, situational awareness, all-hazard emergency response, DEIB, behavioral intervention teams (BITs), CARE teams, domestic and intimate partner violence, mental wellness, stress, and burnout prevention. Numerous case studies are provided with discussion questions and learning takeaways for a variety of business applications.
Compliance Checklist
As our team prepared to launch WVPA, we began with a careful study of the new legal mandate that led us to develop a checklist to ensure compliance for California businesses. This checklist is a useful document to ensure each of the areas required in the new mandate is built into your overall workplace violence prevention plan (WVPP). The checklist is available in a table format as well as a one-page summary sheet to assist with developing an overall plan of action.
Pathways-HR
The Pathways-HR expert system provides supervisors and administrators access to an easy-to-use expert system that allows the user to enter various details of a potential workplace violence scenario and receive a tailored report outlining a risk mitigation plan. The unique nature of the Pathways-HR system is the immediate creation of a tailored risk mitigation plan once the critical details of the scenario are entered into the system. This initial triage system also contains an assessment for suicide risk, a key risk escalator for workplace violence. The Pathways-HR benefit is available at all levels of membership.
PASS
The Physical Assessment of Safety and Security (PASS) is an online checklist and template for completing an assessment of your site's safety and security to determine where to allocate recourses. WVPA focuses on crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) principles, which works with the environment and architecture to prevent and deter crime while maintaining a welcoming presence for visitors. This benefit is reserved for Gold and Platinum members.
Tailored Webinars
For our Platinum members, we provide one 90-minute webinar for your team. We have several topics available for you to choose from that address either supervisors and administators or employees.
Employee Training
A core requirement of any workplace violence prevention plan is ensuring employees have the training and support needed to ensure its effectiveness. Our online classes can each be completed by employees in under an hour using brief video discussions, interactive exercises, case studies and review of core principles.
An All-Hazard Approach
Situational Awareness in the Workplace
Crisis De-Escalation
Mindset Active Assailant Training
WorkSafe Webinars
Hosted by Dr. Brian Van Brunt, president of WVPA, and Brian Heider, executive director, these monthly hour-long trainings will cover a wide variety of topics related to workplace safety. The trainings are offered for free in a commitment to provide accessibility to business owners looking for ways to build a workplace violence prevention plan but are unable to join the membership organization. A summary of the recording highlights will be available on the WVPA YouTube channel. Members will have access to the full recordings as well as additional supplemental materials including checklists, handouts, case examples, process maps, discussion questions and additional video segments from our advisory team.
Violent Incident Log
A key requirement of CA SB 553 is the creation of a violent incident log. This contains the critical elements of a reported incident including the date, time, and location of the incident, the type of violence, a detailed narrative, classification of the person(s) who committed the violence, the circumstances, and any weapons used. Beyond the initial incident investigation, the log also contains clear details on the actions taken by the employer, including consequences, warnings, and future steps to mitigate violence. We have created both a Word and PDF version of a violent incident log and offer a customized version of this if you are interested in purchasing a version with your company logo and contact information. Contact us for details.
Workplace Violence Prevention Plans
At the heart of the California SB 553 requirements is the written workplace violence prevention plan. Members have access to the template plan created by our team of experts as well as any updates to the plan. We have created a template in a word document without extensive formatting, graphics or logos. This template has been created to allow for easy adaptation by businesses to their existing plans. We offer a customized version of this if you are interested in purchasing a more tailored layout for your business. Contact us for details.
DarkFox
The DarkFox Violence Risk Assessment Tool is a sophisticated expert system used to provide detailed risk mitigation plans for scenarios involving a more serious risk of violence that may involve written or direct verbal threats. Building on literature and research from law enforcement, human resources, counseling, and threat assessment fields, this tool is used by threat assessment experts to better guide and inform their mitigation plans. This benefit is reserved for Gold and Platinum members and requires completion of an online training module to gain access (at no additional fee).

This essential book from our advisory board provides you with the tools and knowledge to create a tailored plan for your business.
Train-the-Trainer Courses
The use of online training courses may not be for everyone. While our online, asynchronous courses are designed to overcome employee boredom, fatigue, and frustration at sitting in front of a computer, we know online training won’t work for all businesses. Bringing an expert to train your employees on-site addresses this problem, but the cost of training in-person and the problem of employees working different shifts or being out sick creates additional challenges. To address these problems, we offer four of our employee-based courses as a train-the-trainer process. You simply choose 2-3 supervisors, human resource professionals, or other staff with the ability to teach and we provide a PowerPoint slide deck, employee guide, and an instructor guide. A 90-minute training walk-through for each course provides the tools you will need to teach the course directly to your employees. The courses include:
What is a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan?
Situational Awareness
An All-Hazard Response Plan
Crisis De-escalation.
